Kenner League Day 4: Domingo, Hayes Have Work To Do

As Clyde’s battled against Skills & Scrimmages on Sunday, Georgetown rising sophomores Stephen Domingo and Bradley Hayes showed flashes of what they can do. If they want to get minutes under John Thompson III this season, though, they’re going to have to show a whole lot more.

Skills & Scrimmages topped the de facto home team by a 67-59 scoreline at McDonough Arena on the second weekend of Nike Pro City League action, finishing off what had been a back-and-forth matchup with a timely run late; unfortunately, that last spurt came largely as a result of Domingo’s and Hayes’ crunch-time deficiencies.

Domingo, who by my precise account went 2-for-a-lot from three-point land on the afternoon, missed a potential game-tying three with 2:46 to play, then — with his team forced to foul — was outmuscled on the glass after a missed one-and-one.

Hayes, fed in the post on the next possession, immediately traveled to give the ball right back. It would continue from there, however, as Domingo would get fouled shooting a three (here’s the good part) and then make only one of three from the charity stripe (there’s the bad part).

Obviously, the Hoyas’ depth chart as currently constructed shouldn’t necessitate either player getting minutes at the end of a close contest. But it would be at least nice to know if the two sophs have the kind of mentality to thrive in that setting, and Sunday didn’t really help their cases.

Kenner is a glorified pickup league, to be sure, but that also means that even Georgetown’s end-of-bench guys should be able to make an impact.

There were some good moments, of course — most of which included Hayes’ four blocks — but, for the most part, what we saw was Hayes getting beat repeatedly for position on defense and a trigger-happy Domingo going very cold from outside. The duo’s work on the glass, especially Domingo’s, was another highlight.

The bottom line for the loss from a Georgetown perspective, though, is that these guys may have a long road still ahead of them before they’re seeing quality floor time in the new Big East.

News & Notes

- Charles Mitchell of Skills & Scrimmages, a rising sophomore at Maryland, was definitely the highlight in terms of entertainment value. While Hayes was half-asleep on defense — his coach rightfully asked, “What was that?” after one particularly lackadaisical swipe at the ball — Mitchell was animated and fiery.

And maybe a little too much so: One call from the referee incited a “Hell no! F***!” that led to some quality snark from a few courtside fans.

- Jonathan Wallace ’08, a former four-year starter for the Hoyas at the point, is listed on the Clyde’s roster but might not end up making an appearance this summer. Wallace was signed by German club Walter Tigers Tuebingen last week.

- One late-arriving fan sitting right in front of me pointed at Domingo in the second half and went, “See him there with the shooting sleeve? He goes to South Florida.” The PA announcer, who will say a player’s name and school after every made bucket, corrected him a minute later.
